05-24-08: Check the "Favorite" page for Survivalist links. I predicted that when gas prices started to rise it would cause a domino effect and price for everything will increase because everything has to be trucked around before it gets in the stores where we buy them. I also predicted that making one's carbon footprint as small as possible can be helped by buying locally grown food, not buying processed foods but making things from scratch, getting rid of one's automobile if one lives where there is public transit. Now I'm seeing other people getting on board with this "reduce, reuse, recycle" mind set.

Bushyaib was teasing me last night at dinner because I refuse to throw out a fork with a broken handle. "It still works as a fork." I protested. "Oh you love junk like that." He laughed. I love that broken fork because it's symbolic of "reuse". I'll use something until it can no longer have a purpose anywhere. I look around me and see furniture, throw pillows, book cases, lighting, all "scav'd" from the recycling area in my apartment tower. Living next to San Francisco State University, the scav potential around graduation is amazing. People who are leaving the state, leaving the country, toss out things that I couldn't afford to buy when I was working full time.  My friends and family have the greatest Persian rugs imaginable that were tossed out on the curbside by Saudi foreign exchange students.  I can't fit any more Persian rugs in my apartment, but I can't pass them up when I find them on my walks.

Now that I think of it my portable TV in the kitchen, the blender, toaster oven, baking tins, most of the ceramic dishes, are all scav'd from the sidewalks of Park Merced. My sons have friends who are starting their independent lives and they always need kitchen stuff. All I have to do is put the word out that I have pots, pans, dishes, and in no time someone shows up and takes home things they need. I should put a link to Freecycle on the favorites too.
