My transits when he died.

What I wrote to my girlfriend about George Carlin's death......

"Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things."

I'm sad that George Carlin died but am not surprised, he's had a couple of heart attacks already. It's so sad that he didn't live long enough to accept the Mark Twain award for comedy, scheduled for November. He died knowing he won it though.

Did you know that George Carlin shared the same paddy wagon as Lenny Bruce, when Lenny Bruce got arrested for obscenity in NYC? The cops were detaining the audience and asking questions. When George was asked for ID he said he didn't believe in Government ID, so he was arrested and shared the ride to the police station with Lenny Bruce. Now that's having 7 pound balls.

I saw the last Lenny Bruce concert in 1966, pregnant with my first born. I'm proud to say that's my connection with edgy comic history.

George Carlin was inspired by Lenny Bruce, realizing he was telling the wrong jokes to the wrong people in the wrong places. He also wasn't being true to himself.

In the world of extreme-political correctness, comics like George, Lenny and Richard Pryor, are going the way of the DoDo bird.

I remember old Red Fox and Moms Mably records, listened to when parents weren't around. I remember laughing uncontrollably listening to these comedy albums. I remember realizing that I wasn't "right" for knowing this stuff was funny.

This leaves Lewis Black as the voice for people who question God, politics, the relative sanity of one's fellow humans. The more I see Lewis Black the more I agree with him. He has a new book out "Me, of little faith" that examines his religious views, or lack thereof.

Yes, George Carlin's death has left me feeling sad, but I keep on thinking of things he said, because he not only made us laugh, he made us think. He felt that extreme natural disasters were the funniest things in the world. He felt that humans were like dirt going down the drain and he just wanted to see the orbits to get smaller and faster as humans destroy themselves.

I didn't agree with his rationale for not voting. I feel that those who vote can complain. Those who don't vote can't. His view was the opposite. "I didn't put them in office, don't blame me!" was his read on the subject.

As a process of dealing with the death of someone I admire I refuse to say that the world has become diminished. I feel it's a call for me to incorporate those things that person had that made me admire them. If they were outspoken, then I should be more outspoken. If they questioned authority, I should remember to do so as well. So for all the things that George Carlin made me think about I shall continue to question those things. Keeping him alive in my thought processes. That's the best memorial I can think of.

I like to picture him on the other side laughing with all the great comics in the afterlife. I like to think that he is touched that so many people are sad with his passing.

Oh he hated how people wouldn't say "He died"... He expired (like a magazine subscription).
