Make your block of pages with white clay for contemporary books. The paper is bleached to that blinding white. If you are doing period books it is suggested to use a light brown, pale yellow, for the pages. Before curing you can gild the edge with the metalic gold powder they sell. There is a liquid gold leaf I am told and folks use that to gild the edges of mini books with paper inside of them, don't know how that works with clay, but it might be an alternative.
